The Serial Bully… Run Away…

After doing some more research on the subject of bullies in the workplace, I found this posting.  It’s probably the most comprehensive resource Ihave found.  It’s amazing how much information there is on the web about this subject. It’s actually pretty scary when you recognize so many of these traits in one person. My advice for someone in this environment, run for the hills while you can, it only gets worse. A lot of times, the longer you stay, the more control the sociopath tries to exert over your life. It’s just not worth it…

Here’s the site if this topic interests you:

The serial bully:

  • is a convincing, practised liar and when called to account, will make up anything spontaneously to fit their needs at that moment
  • has a Jekyll and Hyde nature – is vile, vicious and vindictive in private, but innocent and charming in front of witnesses; no-one can (or wants to) believe this individual has a vindictive nature – only the current target of the serial bully’s aggression sees both sides; whilst the Jekyll side is described as “charming” and convincing enough to deceive personnel, management and a tribunal, the Hyde side is frequently described as “evil”; Hyde is the real person, Jekyll is an act
  • excels at deception and should never be underestimated in their capacity to deceive
  • uses excessive charm and is always plausible and convincing when peers, superiors or others are present (charm can be used to deceive as well as to cover for lack of empathy)
  • is glib, shallow and superficial with plenty of fine words and lots of form – but there’s no substance Read More…

THE DANGER OF BLIND LOYALTY TO POLITICAL LEADERS

By Jim R. Schwiesow

The following is a letter of a type that I often receive from the hard-line Bush supporters who believe that the president is anointed and should be beyond criticism in regard to his administrative policies:

“Just remember, all authority is set in place by God. God obviously set President Bush in a higher place of authority than a lowly sheriff, so when you speak of stupidity you might start your search closer to home (The people who elected a loud mouth liberal)”

The people who elected me to seven consecutive four-year terms in office, I think, would be rather amused at this characterization of me as a liberal. I would guess that it was just the dirtiest word that the writer could think of to describe one who has been critical of his hero, George Bush. Some strange thinking here, but fairly typical of the letters that I receive from those who think the president can walk on water and who believe that he functions as a potentate who is unconstrained by law and is immune, or should be, to criticism from lowly peons such as I. Take the Quiz… I’ll go first.

I’ve done a couple article’s on Psycho bosses, and recently found this new one.  It comes complete with a test you can take to see how disturbed your boss is.  Have fun…

Quiz: Is Your Boss a Psychopath?

The standard clinical test for psychopathy, Robert Hare’s PCL-R, evaluates 20 personality traits overall, but a subset of eight traits defines what he calls the “corporate psychopath” — the nonviolent person prone to the “selfish, callous, and remorseless use of others.” Does your boss fit the profile? Here’s our do-it-yourself quiz drawing on the test manual and Hare’s book Without Conscience. (Disclaimer: If you’re not a psychologist or psychiatrist, this will be a strictly amateur exercise.) We’ve used the pronoun “he,” but research suggests psychologists have underestimated the psychopathic propensity of women. Read More…

Don’t Just Get Informed, Get Involved!

A while back I did an entry about Dennis Kucinich and stated I would follow up with other stories on other candidates. Instead of taking that approach, I decided to evaluate the issues, and then provide each parties stance on them. This will allow you to view where a party stands on the issues instead of getting hooked on a candidate because of a feel good story.

Honestly, I am very hesitant to believe anything any politician says. Their job is to make you believe them, even when they’re lying to your face. I believe they have ALL sold out to their political party for the sake of fund-raising and opinion polls. I miss the old John McCain that had his own opinion and didn’t always follow the GOP party line. I admired him, but he never got the party nod, and so this year, he’s a conformist.

Coping With Psychopaths @ Work

Another good article from Fast Company…

Tips from Martha Stout, author of The Sociopath Next Door.

From: Issue 96 | July 2005 | Page 51

[1] Suspect flattery. Sincere compliments from a coworker or a boss are nice, but outrageous flattery is often an attempt to draw you into a psychopath’s snare. If you feel your ego is being massaged, you may be dealing with a psychopath. Be careful.

[2] Take labels and titles with a grain of salt. Just because someone is older, has a higher position or more degrees, or is wealthier than you are does not mean his or her moral judgment is better than yours.

[3] Always question authority when it conflicts with your own sense of right and wrong. This may be hard to do, but it is crucial to your own career and well-being.

[4] Never agree to help a psychopath conceal his or her suspicious activities at work.

[5] If you are afraid of your boss, never confuse this feeling with respect.

[6] Realistically assess the damage to your life. If it’s too great, you may have to leave. Remember that living well is the best revenge.

George is Just as Guilty…

I have written before about several efforts to impeach the VP, Dick Cheney, but King George should be held accountable for his actions as well.  Take a look at this clip, and then let’s talk about what really happened.

King George’s take:

  • We worked real hard to avoid the war.
  • Saddam would not comply with UN Resolution 1441.
  • We had the backing of the international community.

The Truth:

  • We were going to war with Iraq, no matter what.
  • Resolution 1441 called for Iraq to disclose it’s WMD program and Disarm it’s WMDs and Long Range Missiles.
  • Resolution 1441 did NOT authorize the use of force. The US tried to push through a resolution authorizing the use of force, and it was vetoed by China, Russia, and France. Read More…

A Quiz Worth Taking.

Don’t know who to vote for?  Not sure which candidate holds the same values as you do, or at least who comes cosest?  Take this quiz to find out.

Has America’s Legal System Put Justice Up For Sale?

Maybe it’s not for sale, maybe justice belongs to the highest bidder.

Facts and truth are not required to file a lawsuit, allegations will suffice, and then it’s up to the lawyers to create truth. A legal battle is really just a war of attrition. Money vs. determination. What runs out first? If forced to defend yourself, do you have the courage to stand for your convictions?

Preston Tucker is a great example of a businessman that had to endure countless legal battles and undue scrutiny, just because his competition was afraid he would succeed. He had a great product, his car was years ahead of it’s time. His competition though, felt that the market belonged to them. Greed took over, and the legal system gave the means to trample a mans dreams and the lives of thousands of people were affected.

Preston Tucker was quite possibly the world’s first blogger too. On June 15th, 1948 he took out an ad in many of the countries newspapers, and wrote the public a letter(Click here to read the entire letter). The last paragraph contains a line that echoes the thoughts running through my head today:

When the day comes that anyone can bend our country’s laws and lawmakers to serve selfish, competitive ends, that day democratic government dies.”

Preston Tucker lost his fight, as have many other great entrepreneurs throughout history. The ability to fight is not always in our hands, but while it is, keep fighting. Every once in a while, the underdog wins. Good luck!!!

Get Informed!

Voting for our elected officials is a right. One that often goes unused. Even worse than not using it, is being an uninformed voter, or voting the way someone else tells you to. Just because you work for someone, doesn’t give them the right to tell you how to think… That, to me, is distinctly un-American.

I had a boss a couple of years ago that was a staunch supporter of George W. Bush. He asked everyone he interviewed what their political views were, and if you weren’t supporting Bush, you didn’t get a job. His son wanted to reprimand a worker that had a blue bracelet on, because he thought it meant he was a democrat. (Turns out, the employee was wearing a “Waves of Change” bracelet that Jacksonville civic leaders were putting out in support of a national volunteer effort and the Superbowl that year.)

In honor of that boss, I want to take some time in the upcoming months to evaluate some of the lesser known candidates for President, and share stories from other sources. Hopefully this will lead to a few more informed voters this year…

The first candidate I am listing here is Dennis Kucinich. No, he’s not my pick, or favorite, but he is interesting, and maybe he’ll grow on me…

I will also list some of the platforms for each party, and where the candidates weigh in to help you make your own decision. Get informed. Stay informed. Have an opinion. Vote your conscience. Read More…

Iraq – What Are We Doing There, Really?

The war in Iraq is a travesty. Today, that view is shared by many people, but I’m not just jumping on this bandwagon. I don’t want to sound like a paranoid conspiracy theorist, but the real motivation was clear to me, long before the actual invasion started.

Back when W was shouting about WMD, it just seemed like he was trying a little too hard to me. I felt like he was going to go in, no matter what the UN inspectors said. Saddam could have allowed unfettered access to all of Iraq’s facilities, but that wasn’t going to stop our war machine. This was W’s chance to finish the job dear old dad started, and Dick Cheney had dollar signs and oil wells running wild through his dreams.
